If your Volvo keyfob is working only intermittently, the battery could be dying and you will need to replace it in the near future.
Fortunately, there are simple steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery at your own expense. Choose a clean, dry surface to work on. Then, you can lay out all the tools you require. Locate the battery hatch and make sure that it is set to "open." Make use of a flathead screwdriver, coin, or other similar tool to make the hatch to open. Then, carefully remove the battery by lifting the side closest to the key-ring hook. Be sure to wear rubber gloves to protect the clips or electronic contact surfaces.
Place the new battery into the socket after the previous one is removed. Make sure that the positive end of the battery is facing upwards and that all clips are in place. Then, slide the cover back down and towards the key-ring loop section until it becomes loose and falls off. Uncover the cover and reveal the hidden mechanical key blade. This can be used to unlock your vehicle from the driver's side door when the battery of your key fob is dead or has been lost.

Pressing the unlock button a second time will disable the alarm and unlock the driver's side door. Pressing it again will unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to open the windows during hot days or to let in fresh air before climbing behind the wheel. Locate the small slot that houses the backup/emergency key fob made of metal. Inject the blade of a screwdriver or pry bar tool into this slot and gently open the rear of the fob of the key. Once the fob is opened then locate the CR2032 3V battery and remove it. Replace the battery and snap back together the fob.
Note: Certain older Volvo models use an entirely different type of battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have the thickness of 7/10ths one millimeter lower than a CR2032 So you'll need to be extra careful when replacing your battery.
